"I just saved Gotham twice tonight, now what ?" - 3D character

 > personal project, the Dark Knight

More a learning stage than a character study.

The overall purpose of this project was to learn XSI, Mudbox, Zbrush and Modo and a good workflow to integrate their power on the same project.

After 10 years of Lightwave3D... awesome tools :)

The project is nothing original: Batman, the dark knight (all rights reserverd by DC Comics).

I was looking for a semi-organic subject to practice on Mudbox sculpting: different parts of the same subject like hard and soft edges to practice with.

I used some of the image references from the Batman Begins movie, some useful shots for the modeling and some shots to catch his classical expression.

I did a low poly basic mesh in XSI, then setted up the UVs in Modo.

Some screenshots during the Mudbox refinements and detailing session.

I wanted the final shot to be focused on his face so the body was only partially modeled in XSI and detailed in Mudbox.

The texturing session was easy using Zbrush, a different and fast way to texture up meshes with great results.

The skin texturing was done using some different skin photographs from my personal archive.

Back in XSI for the materials shading, character rig, light setup, passes setup and render with a temporary background.

Then the final step: layers composite and simple color correction in Photoshop (click on the button below to see the final shot).
