Roman Senator - 3D character

The Roman Senator

This little project is to practice with a full digital human figure, body, skin shading, face expression, poses and dresses.

Image description

In this picture my goal is to show, during the Roman Empire days, a "just elected senator" and his pose/expression is intented to show him like not a good kind of person: a bad politician.
To show that he's a bad and corrupted man I figured out his expression like thin eyes/big smile/bad intentions.

Day 1

I want the final shot focused on the upper part of his body, but I'll model the whole figure: I'm not sure about the final shot's background... depending on my free time maybe there will be more senators.

Some Modo / XSI screenshots

The head was modeled apart: the object is an hybrid low and med poly mesh.

The cloths were manually modeled.
When the character will be rigged and will have a couple of poses, I'll use Syflex in XSI to give them a more real-cloth-like look.

Some shots during the head sculpting and detailing session in Mudbox.

Day 2

A better mesh: displacement and normal maps are now ready to be shaded in XSI (textures will be added with ZBrush).

Day 3

The following renders are showing the head obj with a skin shader in XSI, I did some tryouts with different light setups, with and w/o FG.
The SSS skin render pass is still in WIP.

The color, specular, specular color and bump maps needs def more work.

Day 4

the maps were redesigned and the XSI's SSS shader was used. Now I feel better :)
The skin's bump map needed a second level to make the beard's specular map a little softer, a little more real-look-like.

The 75k hairs and the eyebrows were done exctracting the head's interested polys and adding a weight map for their density.

Day 5

As the image was focused on the senator's face, the dresses were textured in a very short time, lacking on their quality. Time's never enough.

I did a very basic rig, just to give a pose to his shoulders and his head.
The expression was done using the Shapemanager.

GATOR was really handy to use and the animation envelopes for the fur's exctracted polys were really easy to copy.

The shading was done looking forward to a render with only 2 passes: color (with SSS) and occlusion.

In those render tests the senator style changed a bit, and so the camera angle and light setup.

Many things were fixed on the hairs, normal map, eyes geometry and expression.

Purpose of the colors
The colors are intentionally an horizontal gradient like "light to dark", just like his expression "good to bad".

Day 6

I wanted to see his expression from "man for the people" to "creepy character" so I did a really short (20 frames) animation to see how his expression becomes sinister.
